Dr Didier Danillon DCounsPsych, CPsychol.

Chartered Counselling Psychologist

NCSCT Certified Stop Smoking Practitioner

About me

I came to the UK from France almost 20 years ago to pursue a career in the pharmaceutical industry, conducting bio-medical research for the development of new drugs. For over 10 years I trained in psychology to pursue my life-long aspiration to become a psychotherapist.

I provide personalised psychological care, with the aim of helping my clients develop an understanding of the difficulties they come to me to address. My approach goes beyond mental-health labels and simply applying counselling techniques and psychotherapeutic models. I engage my clients in a collaborative effort, working towards achieving their goals. I use a flexible and creative approach which combines elements from several models supported by research evidence, including CBT.

Qualifications and experience

I hold a first class honours psychology degree [BSc Psych (Hons)] and a doctorate in Counselling Psychology (DCounsPsych). In addition, I first trained in the biological sciences and hold several postgraduate qualifications in Biochemistry and Protein Engineering.

My passion and main area of expertise are life-limiting and chronic/long-term conditions (in particular cancer), end-of-life and bereavement. I have built on my past scientific career to develop a deep understanding of the psychological needs of cancer and palliative care patients, their relatives, and those caring for them. In addition to my private practice, I work at The Christie Private Care, a world-class private cancer-care centre in Manchester, providing psychological care to cancer patients, their families, and other members of staff.

My experience includes providing care:

  • in multiple settings, including the NHS, forensic and hospice settings, and on the Samaritans helpline.
  • with a range of psychotherapeutic approaches, including CBT and Compassion Focused Therapy.
  • working with individuals (one-to-one), with couples and groups.
  • to address a wide range of psychological difficulties, such as various forms of anxiety, burnout and low self-esteem, which are often found at the root of depression and suicidal feelings.

I am also able to help those looking to stop smoking. I am an NCSCT certified smoking-cessation practitioner.

Professional registration and membership

I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), the body regulating health, psychological and social work professionals. I am also a Chartered member of the British Psychological Society (BPS), the representative body for psychology in the UK.
